North Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements

The Vehicle Financial Act of 1957 requires ALL motor vehicles registered in North Carolina, must be covered by an automobile liability insurance policy. This policy must remain in effect continuously until your vehicles registration is terminated.

Your insurance policy must be provided by an insurance company licensed to do business here in North Carolina.

The minimum liability requirements for a private passenger vehicle are:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury for 1 person
  • $60,000 for bodily injury for 2 or more people
  • $25,000 for property damage

Failure to maintain continuously liability coverage will result in a $50.00 fine and possibly having to surrender your North Carolina license plate for 30 days! If this occurs,in order to get a new license plate, you must first provide proof of liability insurance coverage, pay $50.00 restoration fee and a $50.00 service fee.
